Pad underneath, and just a jacket or blanket on top....
I'm strictly HG down quilts - haven't used a sleeping bag in three years. Sleeping bags were designed for the ground and I find they just don't work that well in a hammock.

Everyone is unique and should consider their sleeping style 1st. I would not recommend that someone buy a sleep bag just for hammock camping however when temps are well below freezing a North Face 0°F bag with pad or UQ works well for me but is very bulky to pack. I only zip it all the way up if it actually gets close to 0°F. Above freezing TQ or sleep bag with zippers removed works better for me but I don't eat a lot of chocolate/sugar etc and therefore I don't move around a lot at night. Getting in and out off a sleep bag or having a zipper under me or trying to pee into a sports bottle while in a sleep bag are all more challenging in a hammock than tent. Reasons other than weight that TQ may be worth a wind draft here and there.
I voted "No Sleeping Bag" but I do in fact own one. I have never used it. It's a 0° Coleman that was a Christmas gift from several years ago. By the time I received it I was just using a wool blanket, CCF pad & the Earth as my insulation.
I use a sleeping bag, not because it is the best out there, but because I had it. It is a mummy bag and I do like the option of the hood for when it gets chilly. I guess if I was to look into a new option I would give a top quilt a try. I don't have anything against them just that I had the sleeping bag when I started hammock camping and I will probably use it till I have issues with it.
They both work, but I find a SB more versatile - a light summer bag (ex. SnugPac Jungle Bag) used as a TQ when it is warm out and my mummy bag/hood is just soooo comfortable when below freezing. That being said, nothing beats a down TQ for comfort or ability to compact.
SB = versatile. Down TQ = comfort and packability.

If I had a sleeping bag worth carrying I'd probably be using a SB and a pad. But since my SB wasn't any good I went with quilts as an upgrade.

I love my REI bag. a hair over a pound, packs down to nothing, and has a cinchable hood. only rated down to 29f but i assume i can use a bag liner for additional warmth.

DD hammock jura 2. Center zip lets me use it as a topquilt, or a regular bag.
