If I want to make a 2' continuous loop to use as a strap extender how long should I cut the amsteel and how long should the bury be?

I make 6" buries, and allow a 1/2 " extra length for each, so 3' + 1" or 37". Some will declare that these buries are too short, but never had a failure. This is for 7/64 cordage.
If your just looking to make an extention piece , why not make it a dogbome?
loop on both ends- 24 inch total will take a 38 in length, mark both ends at 6 and 10 giving you a straight 20 inches with 2-2 inch loops, your bury will be 6 inches on each end,,watch a video on locked brummels, it is very easy stuff once you get it! and this will use less amsteel than a continuos loop

Here's Opie's continuous loop pictoral for a 12" continuous loop:

Just double the amount started with and the buries to get a two ft. (24") continuous loop. I will say that such a huge continuous loop is not the way I would extend my straps. You'd go from straps too short to straps too long.
Easier and more practical to carry two 12" loops or dogbones and daisy chain till you get the length you need.

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Ralph Waldo Emerson
48" for the loop + 6"+ 6" (minimum) for the buries +1.5" for shrinkage due to the buries = 61.5". This should yield a 24" CL. Keep in mind that once weighted enough to "set" the braiding and buries, it will probably end up at about 25".
As others have suggested, a dog bone would also work well.
I just made my first loops today with help from this video. Hope it helps you too. http://youtu.be/xcoKeXAwBZY

My plan is to use them to permanently shorten my straps. I normally carry a 5' and a 7' but I want to add 2' extensions to a set of 4' straps I have so that I'm carrying 6' worth of strap.
Now why didn't I think of that?! I believe that's the route I'm gonna go. The gram weenie in me demands it.
Thanks for the tips and links everyone, they will come in handy next time I want to make some smaller continuous loops.

Can someone tack on a link for how to make the dogbone as suggested above please.
A dogbone is just a section of rope with a fixed eye at both ends. Most ot us use a locked brummel to make the eyes...https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=13328
Just to confuse you...there is also the McDonaly method of making the locked brummel when only one end of the rope can be used... http://l-36.com/brummel2.php
