    Hammock "Tent"

I was just thinking about this right now. This mainly may be a colder weather option, but its an idea I had.

Has anyone made their Hammock into a floating "tent"?

My idea would be to make a hammock sock, much like SGT Rock's Bug Sock 3.1, except it would be made of silnylon.

I would think this would help keep warmth in, keep the bugs out, and keep your dry.

    What do you guys think?

I guess the issue would be with ventilation and perspiration.

Nice! I wasn't sure what it was called. That's super cool.

Is silnylon breathable for something like this?

    Hows the warmth factor?

sil has ZERO breath-ability. You can account for that mechanically but you must account for it.

My WinterSock is made from Momentum or uncoated nylon depending on your desire for breathability vs windproofness.

You could easily throw one together using the BugSock this tutorial.

    I don't personally own one.
Every one I've ever built goes out the door, including my own.

The reports back are very good, depending on temperture/humidity. Sometimes in damp nights above freezing, they can cause considerable condensation and the user needs to adjust the head opening hole to regulate the temperature/humidity building up inside the sock. They really work well on windy, below freezing nights.

As far as temperature difference. The claims have been all over the place, but some have reported seeing 15 or 20 degrees difference between inside and outside. Well I don't know about those numbers, but I do know that it's warmer inside the sock than outside.

Any kind of winter sock works by creating a small layer of warm air or "microclimate" around the hammock. This allows your existing insulation to perform to it's fullest and greatly slows your heat loss.
