It was a different world then. Being a history major from the Naval Academy, I got the chance to live some of the bits of history involved.
Most common reason for death in that age: illness from lousy nutrition.
Most common battle-related death: infection/gangrene from splinters after a cannon ball hit the outer bulkhead and exploded the wood.
Marines spent at least as much time fighting aboard ship as on shore.
It was the time when ships were wood and men were iron.
great pics. got me thinking if the USS Constitution has its own woods
Knotty I strongly suspect the setup is a "best case" scenario. There are attachment between each suspension and the hammocks of staggered. The density of the setup would be dictated in part by the number of crew on board at any one time. When rigged out with a full crew of sailors (for dealing with the ship) and a full complement of Marines (who did the fighting) them little tubs were chock-a-block of bodies, cargo, ammunition and artillery. Dollars to donuts there was little room to get a nice comfy diagonal lie. Some where I think I have seen the figure of 18-20" of width be person. If everyone diagonals to the same side you might get away with it.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Nice picture's thanks for sharing.
I wonder what they would of thought of whoopie slings
===> I believe it does. I met the past Commodore of the Constitution, and he was a pretty interesting guy! The Constitution (Old Ironsides) is the oldest commissioned ship in the Navy. It is used ceremonially now (led the Tall Ships Parade into Boston) and is turned around at her berth once a year, so sun will hit the opposite sides equally. The active duty sailors assigned to her for a tour take it very seriously, and consider it a high honor, much like the the Army Honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC.
As a country, we have a pretty cool military history, in all!

I was fishing on the beach in Manchester by the sea a few years ago and saw the Constituation sailing in front of me. It reminded me of the ending to "The Goonies." It is so much fun to go on those old ships and the actual work involved to sail them is amazing.
