Would there be any advantage to having a whole side zippered, and then passing it underneath the hammock, and then re-zippering? Would the netting have sufficient strength to be useful as a pad pocket?

I'm not that smart to figure that one out....one for the engineers.

I think I heard a story on here once about someone's mom flipping over a hennessy and being held by the netting, not that I'd intentionally try it

I had this mod done by 2q's wife (the master seamstress)
Really quality work, I could have never done this as well. their photos show the detail better than mine:
this adds a lot of utility to the HH, I still like the bottom entry, so 1/2 way works
thanks again 2Q+the Mrs.
I have just unwrapped my new HH Explorer Deluxe and noted a curious feature:
at the tie-outs there is a short tapered tupe, covering the last 2-3" of the hammock body and being fixed with a cable-tie.
what are they good for and, since I have to remove them anyway when adding a zip, are they a structural necessity?

The way I do it, you don't have to remove the "tube" or cable tie to add a zipper. The netting gets cut before that point.
