I made a hammock stand this weekend out of a 6' 1x6, a 8' 4x4, and some 1 5/8 inch fence posts from lowes. Also some misc eye bolts for my whoopies to hook to. I used a 1 3/4 inch hole saw and drilled holes at both ends at an angle (guessed at the angle and had to drill a second one at one end) for the poles to slide tightly into. I used the 1x6 to make two 3 foot long feet and screwed to the bottom. Whats nice is the poles pull right out and it slides under the bed for storage.
I really wanted to hang in my hammock, but didn't feel like being that far from the couch and TV this weekend (just getting over a cold) so this worked perfect.
My wife works nights during the week and is OK with this (if its put away everyday). Now I can sleep in a hammock anytime I like. The storage was the selling point.
I searched for designs and didn't really find anything that's portable around the house. This isn't extremely portable but its about the best I could find. I found a pic of something similar on Google images.
I weigh 160 and I think that is about the max for the 16 gauge fence poles. Maybe some black iron pipe would work better, Any Ideas or comments appreciated.
This pic is from before i drilled the second hole. the pole closest to the camera was to upright making it weak at the bottom.
