I had thought about one of these old gringo. Would be a good size and heavy enough not to blow away. Weight isn't the problem though, it's how the thing rolls up that's the issue.
I had also thought about the tent footprint idea. I could stake it down, or put gear bags on it to prevent blowing around.
Tyvek sounds interesting. Could be cut to any size.
Thanks guys for all the ideas.

I have used a foam pad. It's one of the green ones that I think are army surplus. I like that it keeps me from having to worry about stepping on something sharp when I climb out of the hammock in my usual morning state of grogginess, and it's nice for sitting on and lounging by the fire too. I actually have managed to fall asleep on it a few times when I had a perfectly good hammock hanging a few feet away.

That having been said, I'm working on reducing weight and bulk in my gear, so the pad may be getting replaced by something else, or maybe cut down to just a sit pad.

We use a left over square of padded vinyl that was originally purchased from the clearance bin at JoAnn's for the purpose of making fake gladiator armor for my summer theater camp.

When it wears out, I'll find something else, but so far so good.

No need to roll it...mine lays flat in the bed of my truck or Ranger.

This thread made me think a little. If I can get a hold of a Powered Thread Injector (PTI) before I go to the Hoosier Hang I may see about picking up a piece of sil nylon or coated nylon and making a ground cloth from that. Should be simple. Sew a seam on 4 sides and put a loop on each corner. Should be very light and compact. Wonder if there is a reason I have not read about anyone doing this?

because sil is comparatively fragile; meant to resist falling raindrops, not booted feet.
and while Tyvek is not either, it is designed to last for decades out/inside of a wall...

I use a 12 inch x 12 inch piece of walmart blue pad. works for stepping on, doubles as insulation for my feet.

If weight is not an issue, just use a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet sized to fit your needs.
