I have searched the forum, but have not found the answer I was looking for. Is ther a rule of thumb regarding how much bury is needed for a given diameter of Amsteel?
Such as "X times the diameter" ?

Generally, 8-10" is good to go.

Are you referring to the bury for the adjustable portion of a whoopie sling or the bury for the fixed eye or even the bury to create a loop? For the adjustable portion I have not read anything referring to less than 8 inches. For the fixed eye, if you make a locked brummel then the amount you bury can be fairly short. For a loop, I am not sure. I could be off base though so I hope others with more experience can say for sure.
Here are Samson's splicing instructions. Amsteel Blue is 12 strand, Class 2 line.

I believe there are guidelines for splicing single braid line and the main term for that is 'fid' which is 21 times the diameter of the line. For eye splice buries, I think it is 3 fids. For adjustable buries for whoopie slings, I wouldn't go less than 8 inches. Amsteel is light, I've made whoopies with 12" buries in 1/8" line. Just remember that when you measure out your bury length after inserting the line through itself, it will be shorter by an inch or so. You didn't measure wrong. ;-)

Here is the Samson Rope info on fid lengths. And here is the Samson Rope whoopie sling instructions. You could always make your buries deeper, but I would not make them any shorter than those listed on the Samson website.

Thanks for the great links. As I gather , I cannot go wrong with 21X diameter. And that is probably Samson's testing for "CYA" reliability.
Maybe I will test it at 10X and 5X just to see what happens..............
And to think, I had never even heard of Amsteel before I found this forum!
