At Boy Scout camp in June on day 3 the camp officials said I had to take down my hammock because they "stress the trees," so I dutifully moved to a canvas tent (it was fine, but the hammock would have been better).
Upon my return I resolved to find a way to hang at camp next year. Pictured below is the result: My "portable" hammock stand. It cost about $15 to make and it mostly works.
The parts:
- One 10-foot piece of 1" aluminum electrical conduit, cut in half
- Four 1/4" eye bolts with wing nuts
- Four whoopie slings that I made yesterday
- Four 12" landscape nails
The pictures show the configuration. There is a stake under each pole that prevents slipping. Four whoopie slings anchor the poles.
- Pros: It really is portable. It really does support me in the hammock. It is stable. It was cheap to make.
- Cons: I need much better stakes. Had to find very good ground or the stakes pulled out. It is hard to set up (takes two people).
There you go. I'd love to hear any suggestions on appropriate stakes that won't abrade the amsteel slings.
