Wow, thanks! I actually logged on to find a better answer to hanging my tarp (one where my suspension didn't get in the way) and found this immediately. Seems pretty obvious now that I see it your way. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am not skilled in the knot world, so I use the figure 9 to accomplish the same thing. Thanks again. Perfect.

Today is a bad day to be unprepared...
Thanks for all the feedback! I've updated the graphic to show some of the other knots and methods commonly used. Hopefully this will help others who are looking at how to best hang a tarp with a hammock.
The prusik method, to clarify, doesn't require any knots once it is set up, and provides an easy adjustment system, but it is only one of many options. I like knots, so I have my bias. The real point here is that the "V" provides a suitable gap for the hammock suspension to run in between. Good luck!
Good stuff...needs to be stickied somewhere.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
Ha! Well, thanks. I've got a few more illustrations in the works. I'm a visual/tactile learner, so images work really well for me. If they are simple and clear, even better.
Rigging my hammock for the first time was a challenge. I had a HH and tried to follow the directions (including clipping the tarp to the hammock ridgeline -- bad idea!). It wasn't until I met up with someone else who had "been there, done that" that I really got past the learning curve. Now, hammocks are second nature.
My hope is that these illustrations will help others the way I was helped.
If anyone has any ideas for that would make for a good hammock illustration, feel free to PM me.
Very cool - I like the V method!
What size cord is suggested that goes around the tree for the prusik method for example?
