We're a little late on the draw, but fear not, the NJ Fall Hang is returning! We'll plan on running it similar to last year - read on, and join us out in the Pine Barrens if you can.
When
Friday, November 3rd – Sunday, November 5th, 2023
Where
Batona Campground, Wharton State Forest
Sites and Stuff
The large group site was already booked (not by us) – so we’re gonna work around that. The entire rest of camp is currently open except for what we’ve already reserved.
The plan is to focus on booking the center of camp, so sites:
3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12
IMG_0160.jpeg
That would give us free run of the entire section inside the road that runs through camp. We’ll likely set up a group tent area and fire at sites 3 and 4 (which we already booked).
If you can, book one of those sites listed above for 2 nights, 2 people, 2 cars. Once we have those locked down, you don’t have to actually set up your gear in the site you booked – we can just hang hammocks anywhere in that center area.
If we get all of the center sites reserved, sites 1, 2, and 9 are also suitable for hammocks.
Sites 6 and 7 aren’t great for hammocking so we only need to worry about those if for some reason we have a huge number of people interested, if you have a ground setup, or if you feel you want/need your own space. Each can fit a hammock or two tops, and a tent.

(note: fees to reserve are $3/night for NJ residents, but $5/night for out of staters)
Food
We’ll have a pot luck Saturday night. All other meals plan to fend for yourselves, unless someone wants to plan something otherwise.
Cost
$5 per person, per night stayed. We’ll use that to reimburse people for site booking fees, and get basic supplies (paper products, eating utensils), some firewood, etc.
Any additional donations of firewood for the main fire(s) will be happily accepted.
Other Info
The campground has pit toilets (outhouses) and a fresh water pump.
Temps in the Pine Barrens this time of year (early November) are typically chilly but mild – I believe we’ve gotten lows in the 30s, but it’s usually warmer – so deep winter gear isn’t required. Plus it’s car camping, so you can always pack extra stuff just in case.
