A bugnet ridgeline built-in the hammock?

    Hello,

I recently saw a DIY video of hammock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LH2ffTTJHw) and in it the maker sew the bugnet ridgeline inside the hammock, one of the comments said that it's dangerous and can be snap.
What are your thoughts? is it possible? should I try it? Will it hold?

    Thanks.

    Lookingofrhowto,

If you have no experience with hammocks that have a built-in bugnet, I suggest you first buy a used one (in the For Sale sub-forum) and try it out; see how it's made.

Every commercial hammock I own that has its own net also has a ridgeline. I'm referring to a hammock ridgeline, not a tarp ridgeline. That ridgeline keeps the ends of the hammock from being pulled beyond the design of the bugnet.

On hammocks, with no net - that use a third-party bugnet, the net (usually still expecting a hammock ridgeline to support the net) has the hammock suspension feed out through Velcro closures at the end of the net. If they did their engineering homework, the Velco would give way before the netting would be damaged if the hammock ends were pulled too far apart.

So you've seen the word "ridgeline" several times in my sentences above. Does that give you a hint for minimizing damage potential?
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

When I add a fixed length hammock ridgeline to a gathered end hammock.
Multiply hammock length in inches times .83
Then I make a fixed length hammock ridgeline with a spliced eye on each end, 83% length of hammock.
Then larkshead the eye splice around the continuous loop that is on each end of hammock.

That hammock ridgeline is not sewn into hammock.
There may be vendors who do sew hammock ridgeline to hammock.

It takes some work to get hammock ridgeline to desired length. The buried splice will use more length than the buried part, because the bury itself causes the outer part of bury to use some length to accommodate the inner bury’s girth.
