I was playing around with some options for a simple lightweight hammock setup to take on vacations with me (not for hammock camping - just lounging on the beach or in the woods), so I started playing around with some spare parts I had laying around and here's what I came up with:
- Hummingbird Single w/OEM button links - 5.1oz
- 2 x 15' 1" dyneema straps from eBay - 1.3oz
- 2 x Dutchware Adutchable Clips - .8oz
Total - 7.2oz, only 4 total components for suspension
If you aren't familiar with Dutchware's Adutchable clips, their web page (https://dutchwaregear.com/product/adutchable-clips/) screams that you can't use them with Dyneema (UMHWPE) webbing. However, I found a way that seems to work. First you fold the 'slack' portion coming around the tree into a loop and push it through the slot in the clip:

Then slip the loop over the open 'leg' on the clip:

Then pull it tight to the tree:

You can adjust the length of the strap by pulling up on the bottom of the clip, which loosens the strap and allows you to slide it back and forth. I've spent a couple of hours hanging with this setup and I haven't had it slip yet, but as with anything your mileage may vary. I'm not sure how well this would work on a smooth pole, but if someone wants to try it I'd love to know.
