Hello,
I'm going to try my first DIY hammock and don't know how much fabric to order. This is going to be a 12' hammock out of Hex70 XL. Should I order 4 or 5 yards?
Thanks,
J

I've always been told that when it comes to sewing projects, if you can afford it, buy the extra yardage or risk a huge delay and/org unmatched fabric...
I'm going to assume you are planning a gathered end (GE) hammock. A 12-foot bridge hammock would be a MONSTER!
The first thing to understand is that 4 yards = 12 feet. You won't ever get any more than 12 feet out of 4 yards of fabric. And if you start with 12 feet of fabric, you will always end up with a hammock that is something less than 12 feet. Why? Because you will lose some of that fabric length to gather the ends regardless of the approach you use (e.g. wrapping the ends, sewing channels, etc.). I've found that, realistically, the longest hammock one can produce with 4 yards of fabric is maybe an 11-1/2 foot hammock. Will that be long enough for what you have in mind? If you want a true 12-foot hammock, you don't have any choice but to start with more than 4 yards of fabric.

You are correct, gathered end hammock. 5 yards it is then
Thanks for the info

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Go the full five yards then you've got material to make a stuff sack from and/or do some practice stitching.
