Eventually I got decent enough at eyeballing distance that I typically just go with dyneema straps and J-bend now. When I'm headed to unfamiliar areas, I'll sometimes take whoopies along in case I'm stuck for a longer distance between trees, but I've found that dogbones give me pretty much the same extension benefit for less weight and no fiddle factor. When car camping, I use poly straps and June Bug buckles for the convenience. I've always found straps and buckles a little easier to use than whoopies.
