If she could make that wonderful mosquito tarp, she should be able to make any hammock gear that she wants! If she enjoys creating things, making her own gear might be a fun winter project for her. And, as she researches materials, designs and construction techniques, she will learn a lot about hammocking along the way. As a thru hiker, she will probably appreciate some of the super light materials for her quilts.
I am 61 and this summer took my 62 year old sister hammock camping and she loved it! She was shocked how much more comfortable it was than even her huge, thick inflatable mattress. She has had lots of injuries over the years and has a physical job so she was really leary to try it. She brought her tent and air mattress but after one night in the hammock, her tent never got set up. From one older gal to another, give your MIL my best and let her know that once she tries a hammock, she’ll never go back!
I really hope so she is in the possess of making her own hammock and winter tarp using the patterns from diy supply she just made the comment she is excited and nervous for the trip and hopes this isn't the end of her hiking and I hope too because I think she would make an awesome hiking buddy
