LOL that's great!!!!!!
so, not having been at the planning session this past weekend, did you guys make any decisions on a likely place for the backcountry hang in feb?
A lotta ins... lotta outs... lotta what-have-you's
Sorry that you didn't make Valens Ggreaves. We didn't really settle on the back country location, only to say that we'd travel as far north as we had to to find snow. Depends on the ice as well.
No one objected to Niger and I'd like to see if there's a possibility for a campsite on the NW corner of the lake (map link here)where I saw a small group of snowmobilers stop to fish a couple of years back. Secret hotspot? Niger generally requires lake travel unless we go up and around the west shore along the snowmobile trail.
We're wide open to any other suggestions.

I like niger. pretty easy to get to - I can't imagine ice travel would be unsafe by that time but this isn't a dare to mother nature or anything.

Hiya,
Check the map link in Post#13. We park in the brown open field just 200m east of Algonquin Bound Outfitters & Inn. Depending on the snow cover we can either drive or walk to the NW corner of Niger Lake. There's a snowmobile trail running just back of the west shoreline. From the parking area to the proposed camp, it's 2.39 km by lake and 2.55 km by snowmobile track. The only difference is that you safe about 200m over the lake versus going around on the snowmobile trail.

So any word on a destination?
No one seems to have objected outright to Niger and we even have one "like". The snow looks to be around two feet deep and temperatures in Dorset over the next 14 days look to hover around freezing during the day and then drop to minus seven during the night with more cold in the second week. Sounds almost tropical!
I'm wide open to other locations, QEW for example, but don't know enough about the details. Might call for a daytrip on Saturday. Really, anywhere pretty that has snow and parking would do. Crown land's preferable and a nearby lake with trout in it would be even better. For my part, I'd prefer not to have to go too far or do too many hills if I can at all avoid it.
