I use a neck fan from WallyWorld. All I did was put a rubber band around it for the hanger and it's never come out.
So I ordered the magnet mount that Mr. Hook recommended and received it today. My new improved Hook will come tomorrow. So I just attached it to my old Hook (which is broken, but usable) to test it out. It works great! I would recommend it. What I really like most about it is the size. It should be much easier to store this than that big clip. And yes, it does pass the shake test with flying colors for an iPhone Plus with a not so light case. The phone + case weighs 235g.
I figured I would pass some weight info along to you guys as well. The good news is it only adds a few grams! It appears that the new hook will use the same clip, so no need to wait for that to come in. So comparing the weight of only the original clip vs the alternative magnet mount, the clip is 33g and the magnet is 36g. The 36g is with the smaller circle metal plate. If you choose to use the larger rectangular plate, which isn’t really necessary, then that is going to add 4g.
I will gladly take the extra 3g for a smaller package that is less likely to break and is simpler to use. It cost $9.89 on Amazon for a pack of 2.

I have a few more tips on using the magnet mount for you guys. I happen to have a case with a rough texture for the back side that the metal needs to adhere to. Over the course of the night, the bond broke and the phone fell while the metal plate remained attached to the magnet. So the magnetic force is still sufficient, but if you have a roughly textured case, you need to take some extra precautions. What I did was opted for the larger rectangular plate for more surface area and I added a piece of foam tape that is sticky on both sides between the phone and the metal plate. I’m confident this should solve the problem.
My next tip is that it turns out that the new Hook’s ball joint is slightly larger than the 3D printed model. As a result of this, it’s trickier to get the threaded ring to catch and start tightening now (using the magnet mount). I was very close to giving up and deeming it impossible. But just give it firm pressure and take your time and it does work. You will need to use the rings with the segmented threads, not the ones with the complete threads. I forget which one came with the hook or the magnet, but only the segmented rings work with the magnet.
Okay, back to the experimental phase!
I've used a similar magnet on my phone for a car mount before. I found that on a lot of cases, you can stick the metal plate between the case and the phone. I have a thick case, but it's actually two sections and I can put the magnet between the two. Hoping to play some more with it once I get an attachment for my hook
One more update. The magnet actually holds a 9.7” iPad Pro (1st gen with smooth case)! I’m going to be cautious with it at first, but this is really going to be useful if it holds up!
I think the risk of catching an iPad in the sternum might outweigh my need for a larger viewing area...![]()
