Hammock stands at the campground Friday night?? Hike to the shelter Saturday morning??Or hike the mile in to the shelter Friday and setup base camp for the weekend??
What does the group want to do??
A big thanks to Swung for checking out the area for us

Thanks Swung!! Great job on scouting and the pics.
That Adirondack shelter looks good to me...
even looks like there is plenty of firewood ready to go nearby.
(The law on gathering firewood in WI is "If it's dead and down, it can be used.)
I'm all for Swung's shelter near the Wildcat lot, yet fine with wherever the group wants to go.
Let's make this happen!!!

If it were up to me, I'd rather set up a base camp and hike with a day pack, if any at all. It's still going to August after all, and I don't like the heat! The shelter is on the map that Goobie gave us the link to http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/StateForests...BRSFTrails.pdf
From there we have few options on trails, they all seamed good to me. They're cross country ski trails in the winter so they're well maintained. Only problem could be water? I didn't come across any places to water up on those trails. Might need to carry it in I quess.

So....
The tentative plan is to park on Shale Rd at the trail crossing, hike in a couple hundred yards east to the Shelter, set up a base camp, hike back to the vehicle and drive to Wildcat trailhead, then hike about a mile back to our base camp on a well marked, groomed trail. Easy on us, yet fulfills the DNR's requirements.
Camping in the woods just doesn't get much easier than that!

In this pic we can see an overview of the area. "North Settlement Road" is in this pic three times. Just west (left) of the "d" of the middle one is the Wildcat trailhead parking lot.
West (left) of that across the pic is a "Y" in Shale Rd. A little north (up) from that is a slight bend in the road. Near the north (top) end of that slight bend is the trail crossing we can take east (right) as a shortcut to the shelter.
(insert pithy quote here)
In this pic we can see the trail crossing at Shale Rd as a red dotted line and the shelter as the green icon east (right) of Shale Rd. We should be going slightly uphill as we go east on the trail from Shale Rd.
(Note that the portion of Shale Rd we are interested in is the unlabeled north/south (vertical) white line on the west (left) side of the map. Shale Rd does turn east (right) near the north end (top) of the map. That is the only portion of Shale Rd that is labeled on this map.)
We can easily see from the brown topographic (aka topo) contour lines that we will be traveling on the north (upper in this pic) side of a slight hill. We will then go down a slight hill and up a second hill. Roughly twenty feet of elevation change. The shelter will be on this second hill.

Sounds like we've got our spot! Not sure I'll be humping in a lot of extra gear/food for this one. Maybe if anything I'd drop or stash some extra water/gear at the trail crossing @ Shale road, and pick it up if I need it. How do we make sure the people following the old thread, know that it's been restarted? Just doesn't seem like there's been a lot of follows here? Plus we need to make sure people can pick up camping permits in advance, or if people prefer, apparently the DNR still uses fax machines!! Go figure. Or download the PDF, fill it out and mail it in. They're only open in Black River Falls from 11:00-2:00 Monday through Friday.
