Soon to be hanger with a few questions...Who I am kidding... A lot of questions

    Hi Everyone,

Some of you have helped me on the other post that I made. I have decided to get a Dutch hammock and now need to figure out exactly what I need. I am going to use this 60% casual and 40% camping. The camping I would be doing would usually be hiking or kayaking. I am 5'9 and about 160 pounds. My budget is under $200 when it is all said and done as I am a poor graduate student.

Would you recommend the wide or the standard width? Also would you recommend the double or single? If I go single, I understand that I would need an under quilt correct? Any suggestions on an underquilt? Suggestions on either the 1.6 hexon or the 1.6 argon? Or should I go with the 1.0? Dual knotty or no? Fixed ridgeline? How much more difficult is it to use the whoopie system?

Finally.....To show you how much of a beginner I am.... About what distance should the two trees be apart?

THANKS SO SO SO VERY MUCH!

A few of my thoughts on the fabric...I would recommend the Hexon line. It has great support, great weight ratings and in my opinion one of the best feels of any fabric out there.
You'd be fine with the 1.0 and I loved the diy hammock I built from it. Some do prefer the 1.6 as it has even more support and feel it doesn't stretch as much. I really can't tell much difference at 5'8" and 155lbs.
Currently only the 1.6 comes in the extra wide width, though a 1.0 wide version is expected to be released in the future.
The extra width is extremely subjective.

I bet you'll love the finished product whatever you may ultimately decide.

Just saw a recent thread on the 1.6 or 1.0 Hexon debate....

No need for wide width at your height and weight. The majority of people who like wide hammocks are wide people. Only get a double layer if you plan on trying to get by with a pad, rather than an underquilt.

For underquilts, the Jarbidge is highly recommended: around 20 ounces, good down to 25* F, and $100. The Knotty mod is, in my opinion, more for people who use wide hammocks, or otherwise have a certain inability to keep their topquilts in their hammock (I've never had the problem so I see no need for a Knotty Mod). I've always used adjustable ridgelines, though I have a couple of fixed ridgeline hammocks. I don't ever adjust my hammock ridgeline, but it's simple to make a whoopie sling adjustable ridgeline out of Zing-It 1.75 mm so that's what I've always done.

I've been using a Dutch Whoopie Hook suspension for about four years. While there are some posts that complain about the whoopie sling freezing, its never happened to me (even down to -3* F) so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. You'll also occasionally hear people saying that you can decrease the minimum hang distance with other suspensions (UCR or cinch buckle, for example), but I've never had any problems so I disregard that criticism. I just find trees that are 12 to 15 ft. apart (I use 11 ft. hammocks and 11 ft. tarps) so the Dutch whoopie hook suspension works great for me.

With regard to the knotty mode I like mine yet if I was really looking to save a little I would have skipped it for my first purchase and put that money to a UQ. I am a big guy about 6'2" and 280 and I went with the wide hexon 1.6 which is a very great feel compared to the standard fabric for eno and grand trunk. Yet I agree with Eidson you won't need the wide to get the flat lay due to your height. If try to save some to start you can skip the ridge line and always add it later.

    It's all a matter of taste. I'm only 5'4", ~132lbs, and for a simple no-net hammock I prefer wide.

If you want to use a pad, double layer. If you want your hammock to be less stretchy, double layer. If you want to save weight, single layer. If you like stretch, single layer.

You can use a pad in a single layer hammock. Many people do. But it moves around more easily (which is not what you want). If you are using a sleeping bag, you could always put the pad inside. This should also help keeping the pad in place. I haven't tried this method, though, so I can't say how well it works and if there are unwanted side-effects.

Since you're on a budget, get a synthetic underquilt. Kick A$$ and Locolibre both make affordable Climashield underquilts.

If you like stretch, go for Argon. If you prefer more support, get Hexon.

If you are bothered by floppy fabric, or have a problem with stuff falling out of your hammock, get a Knotty mod. Dual if you lose not just your top quilt / sleeping bag but also your pillow.

I have several hammocks with Knotty mods, but found that I don't like them. They put pressure on the feet and head when cinched up. Maybe this is a non-issue with a wide hammock, but I don't really miss the mod in my DIY hammocks.

With a no-net, get an adjustable ridgeline. It allows you to play with hammock sag and find your personal hammock sweet spot.

Not difficult. Just different. I like the light weight of whoopies, but don't like that you need more distance between the trees. If you get Dutch Spiders, it's easy to work around this restriction, though.

The ultimate hang is THE best starting point for this of ever. Comprehensive and simplistic. Hexon 1.0, jarbudge uq, poncho liner tq, kelty noahs tarp 12, and the J-bend on straps solution. Best starter set i can imagine.

As others have said the book the ultimate hang is a great reference as is Shug's videos. I learned a lot from Shug and still enjoy re-watching them.
