RSBTR DIY vs. Dutch 11 ft.

all I have is a Dutch 11' and I love it, so I can't judge RSBTR. I will say that in HYOH's podcast, I think with the guy from RSBTR (I'm bad with names), maybe someone else - it was stated that the DIY route isn't really for cost savings, but if you enjoy that satisfaction of making your own gear then that is the route for you.

If this is your 1st hammock though I can say, having Dutch add the continuous loops with the cinch buckles was a big help to me, not sure I would sleep comfortable knowing I spliced them (atleast not yet), also time is a factor, I couldn't wait to get in the woods, since buying mine in March I've camped in the woods 4 times (including MAHHA) and countless nights in the back yard - so doing it myself wasn't an option for this impatient camper.

That was Kyle on the podcast - I'd somewhat agree, but there might be some cost savings. If you count your own labor as costing money, however, you're probably going to pay more than if you bought it from someone in the cottage industry.

There really is nothing to compare, however, for the satisfaction of using something you made with your own hands.

I did go ahead and contact them and they can do the double whoopie with my order - they are the same price, so no extra cost... and I will probably do the 5 ft straps since weight savings isn't really much of an issue (I do have hopes of one day doing some backpacking, maybe even chunks of the AT, but like my signature says, just trying to focus on this stage of life).

DIY savings on a hammock are slimmer than on quilts because a hammock has a) less materials and b) less labor. This is especially true on your first hammock (or anything) where there are some economies or learning at play. I've made two DIY hammocks now and can knock them out pretty fast, but I really wrung my hands over the first one. When it comes to suspension, the only DIY angle is really splicing Amsteel and maybe sewing a tree strap, so even less opportunity for savings (but also relatively little work). Couple that with the fact that you usually have to buy more Amsteel (and maybe Zing It if you go for a structural ridge line) and now your project costs exceed the true variable costs of a single hammock and...you get where I'm going.

If you're going make multiple hammocks, I'd highly recommend just jumping in and doing a DIY. You'll overcome any economy of learning and you'll be able to fully utilize everything you buy (eventually). You could buy the raw materials from RBTR or Dutch (I think they're comparable). If you just need a single hammock, buying it and moving on might be the smart money move.

How much does Dutch charge for a DL Hyper D XL with all the fixins? I'm going to guess twice as much
