I looked all over for some welded angles before for mine and never found any. I would prefer a 60 degree over 90 degree though. But I see you implemented them with less angle in a similar fashion as I did. Nice job!

Thanks for the great info
Toober,
Maybe find a buddy with a bender or a muffler shop could put some 15 degree bends in the legs a foot or so from the top. That would help with the wiggle factor a bit.
I don't think the wiggle factor is too bad. I just give one side a little tug on the legs to pull out most of the play in the fittings and it's good to go. But yeah, a good 10 or 15 degrees would be about perfect to reduce it without weakening it vertically too much.
Would it be possible to build this out of 1" EMT conduit?
It shows fitting for 1" EMT on tarps.com, but if there is no weight savings. It would not be worth it.
Oh, I guess I really snapped up those fittings without looking closely at tarps.com, as I didn't even see that section for 1" EMT. I would see if you can find weight numbers somewhere and see if there is a significant weight savings that would make it worthwhile. But also, keep in mind the fence top rail pieces have that tapered connector which make a split top rail easy without any extra connectors needed. I don't know it that is weaker or stronger than a union of EMT.

I built one of these last weekend; what an elegant, sturdy design for a stand. Many thanks for the details and ideas!
I wound up cutting four foot sections for the top rail and using the pre-built connections to fit them together into one 12 foot pole. This seems to work well so far, but I noticed that some folks seem to be attaching their rail pieces together using separate fittings; is one better/stronger than the other? Have other people had successes (or failures) using only the beveled connections that come pre-built into each top rail section?
Glad it worked out well for you! I am very happy with mine, and have slept in it a bunch of times since I put it together.
My top rail is using the regular tapered connections, but I put a little strengthening connector over it since they had it at the store when I bought everything. I am sure it would be fine without it, as I don't see any bending or strain on my top rail at all when I get in it.
