Why do people use the 1/2" rolled hem on the side of their hammocks? Is it because of the selvage edge?

Clean up the selvage and add durability.
You don't have to. I trimmed the selvedge off of this one and used my narrow rolled hem presser foot...mainly because I wanted to see if I could stay sane while using that presser foot.

So Banjoman- are you still sane?
Well, that may not be a question for me to answer , but I was successful using the presser foot. The hardest part, for me at least, was getting the fabric started feeding correctly. Once that was accomplished, it went fairly smoothly as long as I went slow.
Another question might be, "Would I do this small hem again on a hammock?". I'd say probably not. 1) It wouldn't be as good for attaching a zipper/knotty mod/hooks/rings/etc. 2) It wasn't really worth the trouble.
Now that I think more about it, another major reason I put this small hem on this particular hammock was that I bought some RBTR 1.0 robic XL wide fabric and I wanted to stay as wide as I possibly could just for the heck of it.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
