This past weekend I rented a UGQ 20*F ZEPPELIN UNDER QUILT. Temps got down to the mid 30's and I had a couple cold spots. The second night I added an extra down blanket between the UQ and my Sparrow and had zero cold spots..

From the sounds of it I'll have to go with a lighter quilt then a -40, and just have to double up quilts when I winter hang.

You really should have been more than warm enough just with the Zepplin, did you get in the hammock and have someone take a look at it from the outside and adjust it that way??
This happens to me once and awhile and it just comes down to me not having it adjusted properly, a UGQ 20° Zepplin will definitly be good down to 20°, Unless your just a cold sleeper, but i have never had a UGQ quilt that didn't keep me warm down to the temp it was rated for, They (UGQ,Paul) are very particular in making sure thier quilts measure up to what they are rated for.
Try having someone help dial you in before you start carrying extra gear that you may not need.a few cold spots means that the quilt was not snug in those spots, if you where cold all over then it would be the quilt not good enough for the temp ..
Good luck and enjoy your cold weather hanging!

Going by what you said, the cold spot/s fall upon my poor set up, as I didn't have anyone eyeball the Zeplin for me while I was in my Sparrow ... I'm used to the UQ on my Clark that is idiot proof.

Congrats! UGQ makes some sweet stuff! One of these days I'm going to spring for a matching top quilt specifically for my Mclaren Tartan plaid Sparrow.

    From their Order Status page..

4681 CLOQUET, MN, USA 0*F ZEPPELIN UQ 6/1/2017 29 IN PRODUCTION CB MULTICAM

Hopefully I'll see it next week.

I sure could have used it last week while camping as the temps got into the low 50's at night..

My UQ showed up a few days before 11 days of hanging...

5 days at my sons Boy Scout camp, and 6 days on the Chippewa Flowage in WI..

I hung it and treated it with some Sawyer's Permethrin prior to use...

At camp, the nights were down into the low 50's I was plenty warm, in WI the nights were in the high 70's so I didn't need my the UQ.

Quite happy I am with the quilt

I got a Trailwinder from Jared at Simply Light Designs.
    Synthetic.
He has a system where he puts snaps on the Trailwinder and this allows a second layer to be added if needed. So I have a base trailwinder rated to about 10 F and the "extender" gives me another 10 degrees or so. Once May hits, take it off. Nice flexible system.

With an old Ensolite pad in my double-layer hammock, I have been down to 8 F and still comfortable.
