Just out of curiosity: on which end was the shock cord installed - on the stake end or the tarp end? Which diameter is the shock cord? And which stake were you using?

make a patch with the same fabric if you can get it, put the silicone on it and attach to the torn place. Be sure to overlap enough the patch over the tarp, make it bigger than the torn part.

The shock cord was attached to the tarp. 1/8". I think the stake that broke is silver and looks just like MSR.

I used sylicon as glue to stick a patch on both sides.
Going up in the backyard today. Decided to get a new tarp. I think the repair will hold, but I don't want to find out I was wrong at in the dark with rain falling.

I removed the shock cord and won't be using it anymore. I also switched to aluminum y stakes from Dutch.

As a maker of these types of tarps I would strongly suggest you keep the shock cord on the tarps. Especially if you hammock through all of the seasons. The main reason for the shock cord is to help keep the tarp from over-stressing in wind gusts as well as being able to keep the tarp taught during wide changes in temperature and rain. I have used sil poly tarps now for many years, both with and without the shock cord, and the ones with shock cord last longer and work better than those that are tied stiff.

Help on repairing a torn silnylon tarp

You said the shock cord prevents over stressing the tarp. How does it do that when it is fully extended?

Don't stretch the shock cord to it's fullest. Always leave a little extra give. It makes the system dynamic enough to reduce the shock forces going through fabric, pegs etc.

I don't think the shock cord was the cause ,I had the exact same thing happen to me ,very strong winds pulled stakes out and whipped back to tarp. Had to place big rocks on the stakes to keep in the ground .I fixed mine by sewing a small patch on and seam sealing .still working fine .
