    Canada>Ontario->EGL->2020 > Winter Backcountry - Early Feb 2020

    EGL Winter Backcountry - Feb 2020 (7th - 9th?)

    Open invitation to anyone interested in some cold weather hammocking.

    Where: Last year we had a hum-dinger of a time cold hanging just off of the Sunday Lake Dogsledding Trail in Algonquin Park, but we were fortunate not to be post-holing along their trail. For my part, I'm perfectly happy returning to more familiar areas (Niger, Algonquin, Kawartha Highlands) or trying to find some new, scenic and preferably Crown spots. Throw in those ideas. Snowmobile trailheads might be worth a look. Depending on where we're going, carpooling might be a sensible option as parking can be tight in places.

    When: Last year we went around the second weekend of February and that worked out pretty well. I'm game to throw down the proposition that we make it easy on everyone and say that going forward, the second weekends of January and February get penciled in as EGL Valens and Backcountry weekends respectively. Even I can remember that! That makes it Feb 7th-9th this year. We can shift it back a week and go on the Family Day weekend, but that's a good time to spend with, well, family.

    Happy New Years all. Just spoke to Mark and we are in for the 7th, 8th, 9th weekend. I have no opinion on location. Will keep an eye on the thread.

    It looks like these dates line up for me and my brother.

    No real preference on location. Niger looked good in the earlier trip report... Other crown locations are nice options to try/learn about too.

    Here's hoping for a bit more snow this month!

    Current conditions in Algonquin if webcam refreshes as it's supposed to. First grab: Jan 3, 2020 @ 8:41:33. Hopefully the timestamp changes.

    Any interest in Queen Elizabeth Wildlands? Bit closer, and I imagine it's equally deserted in the winter.

    Iguana drove around there a couple of years back and if I recall, parking was a bit of an issue at QEW. Did you see any leads on where the staging areas are?

    QE Wildlands: The western entrance is a fair drive down a road which may not be maintained/plowed. The parking at the falls is free but somewhat limited. I've driven in it December before but that was a warm fall. Don't think any sedans will like it. Never been in through the east.

    Down here we use baby inches to measure. I'm guessing this is something more substantial? Either way, you're doing it right

    I understand the confusion. We use "wildling metric" up here beyond the wall.
