Is any double layer hammock bug-proof from underneath?

I'm currently thinking about my next setup. Since I'm traveling to warm, mosquito-ridden places mostly with a 3/4 length underquilt, I need to be safe from underneath. Now, I know my double layer HH is safe. I would still like to try out the most lightweight double layer solution possible for the next setup though. So what is your experience, are any two layers sufficient to be bug-proof, or is there some sort of threshold concerning the strength of material?

Doing a Permethrin application should help in just about any given hammock.

I've heard that, but I'm trying to avoid that if possible. And the double layer has the additional upside that you can slide a pad in which I do like sometimes.

I think any double layer would be mossy bite proof. But I can only say I have not heard of any one getting bit from below when using a double layer. I certainly don't know of any proof. I wonder what the minimal thickness of the lightest double layer hammocks is compared to the maximum proboscis length of a mossy? But also, I think they pass through the spaces between the fibers, and one thought of how the double layers work is that the layers openings do not line up, meaning the mossy has to actually cut through the fibers. Also, if the two layers are not very tight, if there outer layer can be moved around at all on an occupied, that would add insurance even on the thinnest fabric. I have read that loose clothes ar much better at blocking bites than tight clothes.

Agreed. Mine is double layer as well. I would tend to go more with the hammock that would best suit my needs in terms of the hang, packability, durability and comfort without limiting my options based on under layer bug protection. In that department... you still have options. A thin double layer might be sufficient. A single layer... you could always add an under protector that can double as a pad layer... as well as the bug protection factor. If those prove to be insufficient for bugs you still always have the permethrin option.

On the flip side, if your hammock is heavy/bulky, falls apart on you or just dang uncomfortable.... not much you can do to remedy that.

Exactly, I was hoping that might be the main reason why they are not known to get you through two layers. In this case, the material thickness would not matter much.

Double later Blackbird owner here going on 3 years. No bug bites while camping since I've owned this hammock.
I did get bit when I had a skeeter-beater...however, I'm not certain if that bug got in the hammock with me back when I was a newbie.

Yeah, true. I actually can't think of any downside to just using an UQP all the time when mosquitos are around.

    That's good news! So I guess 20D + 40D is 100% safe.

I live in mosquito central. My hammocks are single layer. I also use a 3/4 length UQ. I wear a tshirt and a pair of shorts at night. I haven't had any bites through all that.
