Spreading out the gathered end for comfort.

I recently saw a Derek Hansen video where he advocated not "larks-heading" the continuous loop that runs through the channel on a gathered end. Instead he took the two ends of the loop and hooked them up to a biner and hooked the suspension to the other side. The idea being that it relaxes the end a bit and creates less floppy material on the sides. I wondered if it might also flatten the lay and help prevent calf ridges. And maybe a longer CL, like the ones Dutch sells for Hennessey hammocks, would work even better.

Has anyone else tried this?

The best way to get rid of that calf ridge is to get a bridge hammock.

Seriously though hanging the foot end higher, putting a pillow under your knees and getting a more diagonal lay are the most fool proof ways of lessen that dreaded calf ridge. You could experiment with the technique that Derek shows. It's never a bad thing to experiment.

I was doing that on my SLD Streamliner's for years, now I just splice a CL in the channel. Seems to improve the lay, at least with that style of hammock.

I've been doing that for some time myself, I wouldn't say it does much for the floppy sides but I think it helps with the lay, see the video below. Also if you have the time there is some interesting and related info buried in THIS THREAD.

Great quality video. Interesting stuff. I'm always looking for ways to address calf ridge issues. I would love to be able to ditch my knee pillow.

Agreed, Jared suggested that when I ordered mine and did permanent loops through the channel instead of the independent loops larks headed. He now lists that as an option.

I like this idea. But how to attach a structural ridgeline? Is there an easier alternative than making a buttonhole in the channel for the ridgeline to go through?
