    I weighed everything.

    EVERYTHING.

It leads to stupid feeling crap like repackaging sunscreen into small little squeeze bottles, bug spray into 1 oz misters, cutting your toothbrush in half and wondering if dual-purposing your Dr. Bronners Soap as toothpaste so you don't have to carry it is within my comfort zone. So it's pretty silly.

Ultimately though, it helps. After one trip you learn what you like and don't like, and after that you've found yourself a happy medium... everything you really want/need, and many pounds lighter. Trips are way more enjoyable when the hike isn't super strenuous. I mean, think about it - say that you only cut 3 pounds from your pack weight. What sounds better to you - carrying 0 lb for ten miles, or 3 lb for ten miles? You will definitely feel it at some point, so cutting every ounce DOES count.

Aim to count ounces. It adds up to pounds. A scale helps. A++ would recommend to everyone.

Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Good catch... I forgot, make sure you carve ventilation holes in your toothbrush for additional weight savings, and trim your fingernails to avoid carrying extra grams on your hands ;-)

This is going to end up like purchasing a portal to the bottom of you wallet..... Good luck!

I got a couple of those portals. One looks like an internal frame backpack, and the other looks like an unfinished recording studio.

It really does help. Once you get it all in a spreadsheet and you see the weight, you make better decisions on what you really need to take.
I just started weighing my gear in preparation for a trip in October and I'm already certain that my back and legs will appreciate the process.

I never invite weight weenies on my hangs anymore.
Back when I did they were always borrowing stuff at meal time, snack time, inspect/fix your feet time.
When it would rain they would be hovering under my appropriately sized tarp, usually shivering do to no coat, looking out at their tiny tarp with their rain coat layed over their hammock to keep the UQ dry.

Then to top it all off in the evening around the fire we would all have to listen how light their pack was and how you don't need to carry this or that...

And you can totally forget if you accidently forgot something that they might have an extra.
