    Dutchware Winter Sock

    Hi all!
I'm looking to extend my camping season and wanted to know if anyone could tell me how much warmer is a winter hammock set up with the sock?
I have a good top and underquilt, tarp and such. I live in Kentucky so I'm wondering if the sock will make much of a difference when nights are around 15-20 degrees?

I have one more for wind. If I'm pretty sure that it will not rain or be overly moistI don't bother deploying the tarp, but have a sock/cover if the wind gets uncomfortable and I don't want to mess with the tarp.

Having said that, I've only used it for this once. It's easier to just pull the TQ up around my neck and snooze on!

I've used mine several times, with and without a tarp, in cold weather consider it a very valuable piece of equipment.

I ordered one last week along with some other Dutch hardware. Looking forward to getting it and trying it out!

Though it helps keep things a little warmer, it also shows it’s benefit if it is windy - especially if the wind changes direction from your protected direction. Also keeps it dark if it’s a bright moon and your tarp is a bit translucent or you are going tarpless. Note that a sock is designed to be breathable; i.e. not waterproof, so you’ll still need a tarp. I think I returned the Dutchware sock because to adjust it, it had to be pulled down from the head end and that was out of reach for me.

I use a WB SpinDrift with the Ridge Runner, and a WB Travel sock (with 2QZQ extensions).

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I agree with the other posters about being useful in the wind.
I only use it as part of my deep cold kit when I'm worried about snow blowing under my tarp. The tarp does the lion's share of the work but the sock will keep the blowing snow off of you. As previously mentioned it isn't really waterproof but when it is that cold the snow doesn't stick and the sock doesn't get wet... Usually closer to 0 degrees is when I use it. I'm not sure how often the cold gets like that in Kentucky where you are?
I've found I don't use it with a tarp which has doors to stop the snow drift.
The sock does add warmth to your set up and it really pays off in the morning if you wanted to sleep in and keep the light out!

Thanks for that info! Yeah, I've got a tarp with four doors to shelter myself in, but I haven't had to do winter camping in heavy snow yet. Used to happen here every winter, now not so much.
It will get down into the single digits some winters but less than more. Thanks Twisting for the response!
