no need, unless you are antsy. ive camped there 4 times and have done hikes in the area numerous times.
it is possible to drive nearly all the way to the campsite, but you wont be getting any of my rum! (that, my friends, you have to work for )
i am still planning on a start at the 260 t/h, camp at See canyon for the night, continue day 2 by hiking to the Tonto creek area and retrieving the shuttle car at the "hatchery trailhead". some could make this hike shorter by taking the Derrick trail (#33) back to the Horton creek t/h. check out this map for details.
Here's everything you want to know about the Highline Trail, and mileages between trailheads.

Just so we are all on the same page... Does anyone have any objections to spending the Friday night in Sees canyon and the Saturday night further down the trail as Te-wa describes below? It's getting close enough that we should start talking about carpooling and how to arrange shuttle cars. Are most people planning on attending Fri-Sun or are there any of you who are attending for two of the three days? I'm looking forward to this and keeping my fingers crossed for good weather.
So, is the plan to basecamp Friday evening near the See Canyon trailhead off 284?

that plan erases the best section of the trail, from 260 t/h to See Canyon. It was my understanding that we start at 260 t/h either after a car camp Friday or early Saturday morning, and hike 9 miles to See Cyn. on Saturday, and stay there, then finish with a 10 mile hike to the Hatchery on Sunday. (or, end the trip at See canyon sunday morning)
i think at least Andy and I were going this route, to get some mileage in.
Just a side comment: I notice that "See Canyon" area is in the same general area as Promontory Butte. This is an area I have car camped several times in the past, summer through fall. We would drive in, from FS road 300 , on a primitive road, then camp within a few yards of the cliff edge, with fantastic views of the basin way down below. I always had the place to myself. Good times!
