They offer more warmth and tend to be softer against the skin. My opinion, anyway.

On that topic, a Mayan hammock is a thing of beauty and joy on a hot day. But, once you start getting into the shoulder season and winter, the open weave of the Mayans starts leaving much to want. Again, JMO, but for year-round sleeping I believe the Brazilians are the best bet. If you don't have A/C in your house, then a Mayan for the summer months and a Brazilian for the rest of the year is near ideal. If you keep your house cool during the colder months, you'll still likely need some form of insulation below you, but you won't need much.
