How to cut down a 25 ft Shock Cord to small pieces for making my tarp tieouts without damaging the cord?
Whatever the answer is, does it also apply to cutting Zing it or Lash it?
thanks!!

I have always cut it in half then half again then melt the ends with a lighter same with my lash it and zing it used the same pieces for roughly 3 years no issues simple over hand knot to make a loop then run it on your tie outs by looping it on itself then attach my zing it with a dutchware ring worms to the shock cord easy as pie

When you cut zing it/lash it, does it untangle before you get the chance to grab the lighter and melt it? If you know what i mean
No it doesn't I think if you left it alone it would eventually I have always done craft time set it in the yard at home and make what I need in one go

No I mean instantly, i think im going to try & zip tie where i cut it so it holds perfectly until i melt it? What do you think
I dont think you need to go that far just pinch below where your melting 2 to 3 secs with a lighter let it cool for a sec then roll it with your fingers tips before it hardens really super simple to do

There is no stored energy in zing-it so it can't spontaneously unravel. One method I like to use when making several cuts of polymer type rope is using a hot iron with a cutting attachment. Then it cuts and fuses at the same time.
Despite shock being elastic, if you cut it without any stretch in it, then the inner core shouldn't slip before it is fused.

tsshaw78 is too hard to say on the trail - Just call me Shaw.
I don't recall ever using LashIt/ZingIt where an end was loose. It is woven back into itself. If I need something that was knotted - like with a double fisherman's knot - I'd use a different type of cord. For example - I now use a corded loop between the tarp end split rings and NAMA claws. I can put a cinching knot in the loop so it doesn't slip out of the claws when the tarp is packed back in its snakeskin. LashIt/ZingIt are rated at hundreds of pounds; I don't need that. Also, some of those woven cords (Dyneema?) are slippery and not engineered for knot tying.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
You won't need to do that. Way overkill. Lash it and zing it will stay together due to the coating until you mess with it for a while. Shock cord will unravel a tiny bit but that will all melt/ Fuse as soon as you touch it with a lighter.
Be sure that if these cords did what are worried they might do, that info would be plastered all over this site. To allay your fears, just cut 1/4 inch off each and observe what happens for yourself.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful... because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience...." --Robert Traver
