I'm thinking of an overnighter to Shining Rock this weekend, starting from Camp Daniel Boone. I prefer Fri/Sat, but if you can't get Friday off, Sat/Sun might also work.
Any interest?

Hey Gordo. Sounds like you’re back in NC. Camp Daniel Boone/Shinning Rock may still be a mess. The trail head was closed last week due to all the flooding across the Pisgah. I don’t see it on the current list of closures, but it’s likely to be pretty muddy still. I’m doing the Mt Rogers/Grayson Highlands loop this weekend. You’re welcome to join if you care to head that way instead. I need to do Sat/Sun nights due to work.
I don't see a closure, but, you're right, the area could still be a mess. Grayson Highlands is an hour further for me. Thanks for your offer - let me think on it!

Camp Daniel Boone has been advertising work weekends for scouts and scouters in the area to try to clean up the damage (which based on the pictures was significant, but not disastrous); if you can get to the camp, you may find it a bit crowded. Have a great hike wherever you go. :-) (I grew up going to that camp, and have taken my troop there, so I follow them on Fb.)

Thanks! I’m pretty much a new comer to the area.

Have been to that scout camp in past years with my son. That road leading to the trail head acts like a funnel for the rain water and last time I was up there years ago it had just rained and the road was washed out and looked more like a rocky stream with water flowing down it. Gordo, I am just down the road from you in Murphy.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
Well, howdy! Where do you like to backpack east of the Mississippi in August? I picked the Shining Rock area because I wanted to get above 5,000'.

Twisty tee - I tried to send you an email, but I’m not sure now if it worked.

Twistytee - OK, my Forums email is broken, and I can't find information on how to fix it. Please email me at [email protected] about this Saturday.
