We set out to backpack 55 miles on the east end of Ozark Highlands Trail. We were hoping to end 2020 on the trail. 2020 had other ideas. After driving 11 hours south, we set up camp at the Stacked Rocks Trailhead. The next morning, we were greeted with subfreezing temperatures and hiked 14 miles to Woolum. After a nice campfire, we went to sleep and the rain rolled in during the middle of the night and stuck around for the next 48 hours. Temperatures were over 40 degrees when we woke up. We started walking and temperatures dropped and the wind kicked up. By the time we hiked 14 miles to Willard's Ferry, temperatures dropped to freezing. We set up camp, escaped our hammocks, dried out, warmed up, and filled our bellies. Temperatures the next day were expected to remain below freezing and the rain was expected to be constant all day. After being close to hypothermic that day and seeing the next days forecast, we decided to quit. We caught a ride from a local friend and made it home to our families before 2021 rolled in.
