This is something that surprised me having been out of back packing for 10-15+ years. Back then, stuff was just heavier. Now, everyone seems to sweat the details over 16oz like we're considering committing adultery. I replaced my 7-8 pound pack this year - just the pack! We didn't think twice about heading off on a multi-day hiking trip with 40 pounds. Then again, going out for more than 3 days is rare for me.
Anyhow, I've been wondering if all this concern is worth it. My pack fully loaded now comes in at 20 pounds. I can carry that all day, the extra 16 oz for my silnylon versus dyneema just isn't worth worrying about for me. I think I would get much more enjoyment out of more insulation tuned to the weather (and may just save a pound there as well - see how I obsess over it! ).
