That's the ticket! Or just sleep over a dying fire...
Taking thunderfly and uqp out this weekend. Need added wind protection with lows in the 20’s. The worst rain storms I’ve been in I used an edge tarp and itched extremely low and steep a frame and was dry as could be. I’ve done that twice with the edge. Really built confidence in the smaller tarp with it pitched so tight and low to the ground.
I like my UQP because it keeps the warmth in my quilt when the wind gets in as it always does.
You make a good case for an UQ protector. The thing I love about hammocks is the openness and pitching the tarp low takes that away. I like the idea of putting the grams on a UQ protector instead of a winter tarp.
A couple of nights ago I skipped the tarp and for the first time ever used a UQP to augment my shortie (EE Revolt) UQ. It worked well, but I didn't remove it during the night to find out if I would have been okay without it. About 10 days earlier I had almost identical conditions and quilts and didn't use the UQP but did use a smaller (HG Hex) tarp and was fine without UQP.
So I guess I still don't know for sure.
And now that the weather is starting to warm up I probably won't get another chance to do a definitive test again until next winter.
