i buy a blackbird, which i love btw, to keep things light. But by the time I had a tarp, UQ, sleeping bag, stakes, stuff sacs, guy lines, my weight for my sleep system is up to 7 lbs 6 ozs. How can i lighten up this cold weather set up,

Yeah .... list weights and name brands ...
Details ... we need details.
I was a tarp/bivy/lite bag/ super small pad guy for a while. No way did I have the comfort that I now have. Also .... my winter kit always gets a bit heavier .... but it is WINTER and I do not want to sleep cold since 1/3 of my time is in the hammock sleeping wonderfully.
We can guide you somewhat ..... ultimately you gotta do what pleases you though. It all still gets you to the woods.

I'm also weight conscious "not weenie" and find my hammock set-up lighter then my ultralight tent set-up.
Speer hammock with Silnylon tarp lighter then my tent/fly/fp.
Yeti UQ lighter then my Thermarest Prolite.
I use the same down bag in both.
This is for 3 seasons so additional weight would be added for below freezing.
tq will be lighter than a sleeping bag
Let's see...
Blackbird 1.1 DL w/ straps: 28 oz
2 JRB Hudson River quilts: 40 oz
MacCat Deluxe w/ lines: 13 oz
stakes: 5 oz
5.4 lbs, can get down into the low 20F temps.
What you using for quilts? What sleeping bag?
okay details:
JRB mt. washington UQ 24.8 in compression stuff sac; BB DL 1.1 31.5; trango superfly wire biners 1.1 oz ea; have both mac cat deluxe or WB superfly 18/26 w/o and with doors (would take doors for 1 side); WM versalite 38.1 dry bag'd; 8 ti stakes 3.1
well you could switch to whoopies and save a few ounces, you could start by going with 4 stakes instead of 8 and then tying off the blackbird to the top two stakes by top i mean towards your head, that way two of the four stakes do double duty and hold the tarp and the bird.
You could lop off a good 18 oz just by getting a top quilt. Yeah, that's a really really great bag... but it's pushing your weight right up there.
I can whack a pound off my weight by taking a foam pad in 40F and above temps.
Add a pack, light stove, and water treatment and you're still under 12 lbs. base weight.
You could switch to a top quilt, netless hammock, 2/3 underquilt, and save 1 1/2 lbs.
