I have a 12' winter tarp which means there can be some interference with the suspension, especially as the trees get further apart. I like to find trees that are just wide enough to accommodate my tarp which allows me to pitch it closer to the hammock. I tend to do the same with my 11' hex tarp. With that spacing, my whoopies aren't needed at all - I attach directly to my straps using my carabiners in lieu of the toggle in a MSH. If the best trees to use are further apart, I have my whoopies.
I'm falling in Kroma's camp - if the trees are too tight for whoopies, just attach to the straps. You might have to redo your MSH once or twice to get your spacing just right, but not a big deal.
