Why should I get an over quilt?

At this point I am using a sleeping bag to sleep in. I don't know if I want to shell out the dough for a top quilt. I am ok for now with the sleeping bag. The reason I ask if worth getting the quilt is weight is not really an issue right now as I have a bad foot and knee so I can't really do much hiking. I mostly car camp. I would like to have less space taken up in the car by the big ole sleeping bag down the line.
Soooo, why should I (and what) get top insulation? If I do get a quilt I would want it for 30-60 degrees. I don't expect to camp below 30(not just yet at least) and don't really need one above 60.
    Thought????

If you are happy with your sleep bag, then continue to use it. If you are not happy with it, then get a TQ. When/if you get the TQ get it for the future not just today. Make the purchase once and be done with it. That is my advice.

I always liked my sleeping bag and defended it's position vs. a top quilt for nearly 2 years...then...

A sleeping bag can be very comfortable as a top cover. The fact that it can wrap around you completely means that no cold drafts can get to you. They can be a little more difficult to get into and out of but that can be managed. The top quilt can be much lighter, depending on what you get, but if weight is not an issue then stick with the bag. You won't sleep that much better under a $250-$300 top quilt.
Now, having said that, I did finally buy my first down top quilt (mainly for the weight savings) - after i have used it in the colder weather I may change my tune.

During a NJ Winter Hang I used both my top Quilt and a 40* Sleeping bag the combination helped to keep me warm when the temps hit single digits.

No reason to ditch the bag. I didn't have a good bag when I started hammocking so I went straight to a good top quilt. My wife uses the Walmart 32 down bag and a 40 TQ when it's really cold. She loves getting in the bag and having extra to pull on top.

Bulk & weight are the only downsides to the bag. Since you aren't hiking, spend the money on a comfy camp chair.

I used a campmor down bag for 6 years in my hammock before going to a TQ. I have had more treks lately that require less weight so have gone to the TQ. I like it because of the simplicity, but had many cozy nights using that bag as a TQ.

Yeah, a lot of stuff you see mentioned here is for hikers who don't want to carry much weight. My zero degree TQ weighs 24oz - and how much does your 30 degree bag (guessing) weigh? But if you're camping, not lugging your gear for miles, you have lots of options. No need to get a cuben tarp when the $10 one at Home Depot will do. You could even use a bunch of blankets for under insulation instead of having an UQ. And you surely do not need a TQ if you have a sufficient sleeping bag.

But where's the fun if you're not buying new gear to test out?!

If weight and bulk are no issue, stick with the sleeping bag.
