    550 ridgeline?

Hey all. I'm in the process of putting a ridgeline on a gathered end hammock and I'm curious if anyone has experience with paracord as a ridgeline. I understand that it stretches under weight but is the load on a ridgeline enough to stretch it out and stress my bugnet?

    Thumbs up

It has been my experiance that 550 para tends to strecth,
zing it or amteel will work alot better for a ridge line, imo..for the bug net your gonna want shock cord, the para cord is not gonna give you that much flexability

    Welcome to HF.

Additional info would be helpful. What type hammock and bug net do you have. Are you talking about a structural ridgeline on the hammock to set the sag, a separate ridgeline to support a bugnet, etc.

Stay away from P-chord for anything remotely structural. It stretches and wicks water. It's not all that strong compared to Amsteel and Dyneema.

I wouldn't even use it for a bugnet. Probably could, but I just wouldn't. You can do things like whip the gathered ends of a hammock, though, and a scad of other bushcrafting activities and projects, it's qualities just don't always work with our dynamic suspension demands.

Thanks so much. I did some research on amsteel and that'll be what I use. I've been reading a fair amount on this forum and I have to give everyone props for being informative, polite and helpful to eachother.

If it's the 550 or nothing I'd use it until I could get something better. It seems like I read somewhere that it will stretch about 10%. It doesn't sound like much but a couple inches will significantly change they way your hammock feels.

I like dynaglide for the ridge line.

Of all the typical cord choices its the lightest. It has a 1000lb breaking strength so no need to worry about loading it up a little extra accidentally, easy to splice, and it's basically the same price as amsteel or zing-it.

Only down side is it only comes in neon green or orange.

I use it for the ridge line of my tarp and my tarp is always sagging by morning. I do tie my bugnet to it. It works, just not as well as zing it.
