    Emergency blanket as underquilt

Sorry if this has been posted already, haven't seen anything myself.

Does this make any sense? Could you somehow suspend one of those heat reflective emergency blankets under your hammock in a way that created a closed pocket of air between the hammock and reflective blanket to keep you warm?

Not sure if that would work and have never tried it but randomly thought of it today as I was planning a trip in which I may need a little extra warmth. Could you use it in addition to an underquilt?

    Thanks!

Most of them won't last very long, and will be very noisy too. They would add a few degrees of warmth and would add a fair amount of wind protection to an underquilt, but I would not want to rely on one alone for comfort.

The only way I could imagine it helping is if it was strung under an UQ and it blocked some wind. I can't envision how it could trap enough warm air to matter on its own.

They're flimsy and disposable and hard to keep from tearing. Before I got an UQ, I used to tape an emergency blanket to the bottom of my ccf pad. Sometimes I'd tape a wool or fleece blanket on top of the pad (to absorb some of the inevitable condensation). Those emergency blankets rip if you look at them funny.

Gathering the ends to prevent drafts is an issue too. I had no luck with it when I tried it. I have always wanted to try garbage bags packed with leaves though. Hang low and pack them around you.

I can only envision a steam bath from trying this.

I use a non-breathable undercover with a space blanket crumpled up inside (to prevent air movement, not to "reflect body heat"; you could use forest duff for this as well, if you're not worried about camp set up time or creepy crawlies) down to ~50* F. I'm a very warm sleeper, though, and would only recommend that for most folks to ~55-60* F. I do not drown in sweat (and I'm a sweater), and it helps me get by with a tiny asym tarp (and doubles as my poncho, saving weight there, as well).

    Hope it helps!
