    1.1 ripstop underquilt = mistake?

I tested my new DIY underquilt this weekend. I made it using the video instructions posted on YouTube by Eric at CWHammocks, which were very helpful. I used 1.1 ripstop nylon for the shell and Primaloft Sport 5 oz. insulation. Since I had 1.5 feet of insulation left, I added it as an extra layer down the middle of the underquilt for a little extra warmth. Using shockcord in side channels makes for a super easy adjustable hang.

Result: as long as there is no wind, it's awesome. However, any wind blows right through the uncoated ripstop nylon. I know, because it was super windy where I was, and even in the trees I was feeling the gusts.

I'm thinking that the ripstop was a mistake. It probably vents moisture better – not a small consideration, because I sweat profusely at the first opportunity – but I doubt that this is that much of an issue for an underquilt, and feeling wind through the quilt is clearly undesirable. (BTW, altho Eric also used ripstop, I had decided to do so and bought the fabric BEFORE I found his videos – so this is in no way his fault!!!)

At this point I guess my choices are: A) take the UQ apart and remake it with different shell material on at least one side (won't happen); B) add a layer of DWR or something on the outside of the UQ, which would add some weight and bulk, but not too much; C) make a sock to go around hammock and UQ, which would block wind and add warmth.

I am definitely going to make the sock. The question is whether adding a windproof layer to the UQ would be a good idea. I do a lot of camping in the mountains, where wind is always a possibility, and at this point I am wondering if there are very many circumstances where there would be a reason to want the UQ to be without it (other than weight).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed!

How about an uq protector? Either diy or 2QZQ sell them, use calendered fabric.

    Under Quilt Protector or UQP

It is something like a half-sock made up of your choice in material. Ripstop with or without a coating.

2QZQ make and sell these but it is also a straightforward DIY project.

D'oh! Of course, UQP. I even have one I made but didn't take with me this weekend.

The question remains: is there ever any advantage to an UQ that is so breathable as to be completely vulnerable to wind?

I made a couple of UQs with 1.1 pure finish as an outer shell. The big advantage was that they could convert to TQs fairly well.

sounds like the 1.1 ripstop yu used for your UQ shell wasn't calendared. The calendaring process makes ripstop much more wind resistant as well as a little water resistant.

It's not a coating, but calendaring involves rolling the fabric under a hot roller, which fuses the fibers together. you can easily tell the difference between the two just by looking and blowing through the fabric.

Like others have said, a UQP will be the easiest solution.

Just keep that in mind next UQ you build. Especially if you are building a down UQ because calendaring also makes the fabric down proof.

Big tarp will help cut the wind too. Think Superfly or other XL tarp.

My thoughts exactly. However, first I'd check that the suspension is snug. If not, it'll let wind right "through" (between the hammock and the UQ). If so, wouldn't have anything to do with the UQ itself.

I had the same problem with my DIY underquilt.

One night on Chestnut Knob I hung beside the pond that is a ways before the rock cabin sheltr there. In the night, the wind started roaring up the mountain side. I moved my setup several time, but was unable to get the tarp to stop the gale. I about froze.

much later, I finally rigged up my dri ducks poncho as a weather shield. That took care of the problem.

In hind sight, a heavier DWR outside material might have been better. I tried to clone JRB, but I've never actually seen or touched one of theirs. I think my eyeballs were out of calibration.

Here's the thread on my project
