There are a lot of happy ENO users, and if you sleep well in it, you sure could use it on a thruhike. Since you have a bit of time until you start your hike, you might want to try other options, though. You might find that you are a lot more comfortable in a hammock more suitable for your size and weight - that might also be lighter... You will also have to look into bug protection.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, get some ripstop from one of the vendors here (the hottest ripstop fabrics at the moment are Dutch's Argon 1.6oz ripstop and Ripstopbytheroll's HyperD 1.6oz / 1.0oz) and make a simple DIY. You could try different whipping methods - channel ended like the ENO, the Hennessy fold or the Warbonnet whip. They make a big difference in the way the hammock feels. In any case, you wouldn't have to spend much, but you'd have a better idea on the comfort different hammocks offer. Then, if you still feel that the ENO is your best choice for your thruhike, go for it.

Another pretty cheap option would be to get a simple hammock from BIAS. The website needs getting used to, but they make very nice hammocks. A single layer hammock without bells and whistles (and suspension) will only set you back $50. A single layer no-net Traveler hammock from Warbonnet will only cost $60 ($65 for the 11' version) and includes the complete suspension. You will have a hard time finding something cheaper and better...

I just checked those out, and they are a lot lighter. I may actually pick one of those up for backpacking trips. I saw that they have different lengths. Is there an advantage to longer hammocks? I am 5'6'' 135 lbs. I think my eeno is 9 and I find it quite comfortable in the double size, the single nest not as much so for overnight camping. I had one of those and returnrd it.

It's important to read the fine print. 28 bucks just gets you a hammock body. No suspension (whoopies/treestraps or buckles/straps)
I recently read Dutch is offering a 1.6 argon hammock body around the same price point.

I did see that. Right now I am using a 1 inch 800 lb test ratchet strap and 2climbing rings at each end and I really like that system. Maybe could be adapted to one of these somehow.

PS: I've already had two argon hammocks sewn by a friend and they are very LIGHTweight and comfortable.

If you already own the ENO and you are comfortable in it, spend your $ some where else. There is nothing wrong with an ENO and it will certainly stand up to many nights of use. My ENO is used hard by my nephews and my brother. They are all in it every chance they get and my brother is 6'4" and over 300 (he says 280 but he is lying). The nephews are teens and use it like a bouncing board. So I know it will stand up to hard use.

Now if you are not comfortable in your ENO, by all means let us help you spend more $. We are very, very good at that! If you want something lighter in weight, again we can help you spend $

Thanks everyone for the replies everyone! I wound up buying a Hennessy for now and will prob wind up getting an 11 ft argon for any thru's in the future
