Did your hammock cause any pains or aches when you first started using it?

I know hammocking is a personal affair. We are all like snowflakes and have to find that "butter zone" hang to feel comfortable. I feel like I'm getting close, but still to this day after a couple of hours of hours in my hammock I start to develop a dull aches in about the left middle area of my back. Not so much that its painful but definitely noticeable. Did you have any pains or aches when you first got into hammocking and how did you correct them?

No... in fact, I sleep better and wake up with less pain in my hammock than I do in my bed. Not that I wake up frequently with pain in my bed either to be honest. But it does happen. I have woken up with a stiff neck in my hammock, but that was from using a pillow that was FAR too big for the hammock.

Actually... I just ordered a bed that allows you to lay like you are in a hammock... expensive bugger, but it's cool!

I never had any issues but as you said we are all different. Maybe you require a little lumbar support. Maybe a small pillow of cushioning of some kind in the small of your back might help?

I get lower back pain and shoulder squeeze with hammock material that is too thin and stretchy. I much prefer a firmer minimal stretch fabric.

I have only had the chance to hang twice so far, and after those first two nights, my neck was really stiff and my lower back hurt just a little. Obviously being my first time, I'm sure I was doing a lot of things wrong. I'm gonna try using a pillow and adjust the way I'm positioned next time (hopefully this weekend!) and see how that goes. If that doesn't work then I'll keep trying I guess!

I took a long time off from camping and, while I forgot how much I enjoy being in the woods, I could never get reacclimated to sleeping on the hard ground. I use a CCF pad, and the first trip wasn't bad but it never got more comfortable after that first time. My first night in a hammock was the most comfortable I have been on a camping trip in at least 3 years. I have to thank my son's scout troop for introducing me to hammock camping.

Neck, my neck was giving me a fit at first. Then I moved to a more diagonal lay and a small pillow...no more neck issues. Each of us kind of has to figure out what works and what does not work for us.

I had a mildly stiff neck my first night in my old ENO Singlenest but added a small pillow and no more stiff neck. I also can't lay with my feet to the right in a gathered-end hammock or I'm likely to get a cramp in the arch of my right foot. Other than those solved issues I sleep better in my hammocks than my now disassembled bed.

I got calf cramps the first few times. Then I slept with my left knee leaning outward, or slightly on my side and that took care of it.

That was in 10' or less hammocks though. Since getting an 11', it doesn't matter what way I sleep, I'm still comfy.

Most comfortable by far though, is my Ridgerunner.
