From experience , I've never had any issues when washing my hammock in my front loader machine. I usually remove any cords such as my fixed ridge line as a precaution, wash on gentle cycle and add a few towels to help gently "scrub" it. Not too much soap, and no softener. You can tumble dry, (low heat of course), I like to take it out of the dryer just as it feels dry to the touch...Its usually still a bit damp... easily noticeable once it cools down. I hang it up so it can air dry the rest of the way... There would be no problem with leaving the hammock in the dryer until fully dry, but in my mind that the less it has to endure, the longer it will last.

MBennett- do you use dryer sheets on the hammock also? They're supposed to have the effect of keeping mosquitoes at bay. If the dryer is going to be used then it seems like a good time to hit it with the light protection.

I never thought of using those... but I would agree if they do in fact have that effect on mosquitos, plus it makes you're hammock smell good too!

I always just hand wash them in the bath tub, use the shower to rinse.

I will occasionally wash mine. I use phosphate free and scent free detergent, mild and not much of it. The same stuff I use on my hunting clothing. My hammock goes into a mesh laundry bag to help protect it from the whirling dervish of the top loader's agitator. So far, no issues. I often hang in areas where cats and bears are known to be found, I prefer trying to be as scent free as possible, so no scented dryer sheets for me.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Took the suspension straps off and turned my WBBB inside out and put it in a mesh bag. Used a no dasher top loader with normal laundry and soap. Hung up to dry came out fine.

Actually it depends on the material itself, for example ENO and Ticket To The Moon they use parachute nylon, quite thin but good material.
And some other brands they use thicker material like ripstop nylon, or even thicker than than.
So it's better to use hand washing, gentle detergent, and cold water.

Would it make sense to use a detergent that has water repellent in it (like nikwax or whatever it's called)? Or is that just a sales hype?

Use non-bio detergent and no fabric softener to maintain and restore the dwr that's already there, nikwax with dwr is great for restoring dwr that has been lost but if you don't need it then you're wasting money.
