    Oh my.

Let's all pool our resources and start our own "hammocks only campgrounds (HOCs)!" We'll have our greatest minds (professor hammock, dutch, MacEntyre, etc) genetically modify the campground trees to have strap tolerant bark and we'll place the trees at exactly the right spans to get the golden 30 degree suspension angles we all love!

    LOL.

Seriously, I think Shug and a few others commented perfectly. I'm pretty lucky in that I haven't had many issues with rangers (thankfully). When I have been confronted by a ranger, I'll fight the urge to be a raging, know-it-all, uppity jerk. Instead, I try hard to listen to the concerns raised. Sometimes, I'm surprised by what I hear (the concern is quite different than what I expected). Whenever I can, I volunteer to work with the organizations/policy-makers to come up with solutions that are a "win-win" for everyone. Educating from within, where trust already exists, works wonders.

(cK stepping down from her soapbox, now)

In case there is any doubt.... I love the hamm'mock. I want everyone to have the opportunity to experience the hamm'mock (a.k.a., sleeping in the piney woods, beneath the dark, starry sky, cocooned in downy goodness).

    HANG ON, FOLKS!!

I doubt there would ever be any kind of large scale hammock ban... There just aren't very many people that hammock camp, so I don't think it really gets that much notice. It is like anything else - once you get into something you start to notice it everywhere, that is why it seems hammock camping is becoming more prevalent.

Geez I don't know...I'm still sticking to my second part about popularity. Just now I get on facebook and see PureMichigan's post:

Catching on like wildfire IMO. Everywhere I look! Don't make me out to be a pessimist guys. I'm just stating facts and hopefully some polite conversation on a hobby we all LOVE.

I think manufacturers that sell hammocks either: without suspension, or with cord suspension but no straps should be forced to include them... without exception.

There's one brand in particular I have a major bone about.. Not a cottage vendor.. but a big box seller.

I would like to chime in on this. The reason they don't supply suspension is the regulations and liability.

Anyone supplying straps to the public MUST tag each strap with no less than a SWL and the strap manufacturers name. In addition. Documentation and test results on each strap design MUST be on file by the manufacture for each strap design showing testing conditions, materials and construction procedures.
Let alone, try to find insurance for one design of hammock suspension strap and it will cost you upwards around 6 7 thousand $$ per year.

How many cottage hammock makers are prepared for that?
I've been under the impression most cottage vendors include suspension. I know a few people who have purchased from Warbonnet, Dream, etc that received suspension with it.

There's no different requirements for rope suspensions than for strap suspensions.

That is fine and dandy. But I would ask, "Do they know the regulations about supplying straps to the public?

I wonder if Michigan is a special case? I recently took my sons to where we had the chilli hang last fall and mentioned my hammock, no response from the ranger. Upon arrival I found I had picked the wrong site and they let me change to a better one. She was curious as to what made it better, after I explained the tree distance she was satisfied. Maybe more exposure to good hangers is what is needed?
