This is all solid advice and a great way to try a new thing.

I bought my two cheapie hammocks 2-3 months before Xmas and only tried them out at Xmas but still took my "normal" camping gear just in case.

For me the comfort in the short cheapie with permanent bugnet was instant.
I've since made quite a few he hammocks, whoopie slings, suspension devices and a tarp.

I will never go back to ground sleeping-its just to heavy and uncomfortable and an air mattress let's you down at the worst times

Hammock 102: How to achieve hammock nirvana

I have an immensely cheap piece of drywall in my dorm and every time I set up a spax screw and a d ring and sit in the hammock it collapses and the screws rip out the wall. I'm tempted to try a 2x4 but I'm worried the same thing will happen when I bolt it down, without the aid of a drill, any suggestions?

Also, for now a stand is out of the question, I don't think I'd have the space to fit it.

No fasteners are going to enable drywall alone to support your weight! It's imperative that you find the center of the 2x4 stud behind the drywall to mount your d-rings.

I found the stud and it's made of steel.

If your dorm room isn't framed with 2x4 or 2x6 walls, you probably won't be able to easily mount d-rings in a way you can repair the damage when it's time to move out. Good luck, maybe someone else has some creative suggestions...

Are you sure you have steel framed walls? Use a strong magnet to verify.

I'm thinking about maybe investing in a drill, it's a tool I'm gonna need a lot in life hopefully. Would drilling into the steel with a spax screw work?

No. You would need to bolt into steel, which would require substantial repair work to the drywall.

I would mount a 2" x 10" x long enough to span over three wall studs. Put a threaded eyebolt (not wood-lag threaded) in the center with a few large washers under the nut, maybe counter sunk a little so it does not scratch the wall. Paint it. Puts some cloth or felt on the back so it does not scratch the wall. Have a friend hold it up and predrill and screw in 3-4 screws through the board and into each of the three studs. You can buy steel stud screws fairly cheap. This would give you a fair chance of success. This would be my suggestion for wood studs also. 1 stud only has two nails at the top, and they may be thinner ones from a nail gun. The end could easily split if pulled with either nail, this is not the forces the connection was made for. People that use one stud must be depending on the drywall helping to hold the hammock up!

    Do the anchor rings hang.....

So, when I hang these anchor rings, do they hang directly across from each other? How far from the ground? Both same distance from the ground?

    - Locate the studs using a stud finder. Have patience, check and recheck.
    - Measure the distance between the two hang points.
    - Use this online calculator to determine how high on the wall to install the anchor rings:
    - Using one of the anchor rings as a guide, mark where the screws will go.
    - Drill pilot holes, and then drill in the screws. Done.

    Materials you will need
    - Spax screws (#14 x 2 1/2"). These are high quality screws (about $4 for ten).
    - Anchor rings rated 400 lbs. safe load, and 1200 lbs. (or more) breaking strength (about $5 for two).
    - See image:
