    Alas, another rookie....

-Experienced outdoorsman, trail runner, brand new to hammocks. Recently purchased a moderately priced hammock online am looking for answers to very basic questions regarding set-up, comfort etc. In addition to being ignorant and am doubly blessed by being technologically inept. What is the best way to go about this? Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A copy of The Ultimate Hang (paper or electronic) is a great place to start. Much basic info compiled in one location. Easily worth hours and hours trolling the forums, but...you'll want to do that too!

+1 on a copy of The Ultimate Hang, but I would also recommend looking up Shug's Videos that offer a very informative (and hilarious) overview of hammock camping.

    - Nonsense. You only say that because no one ever has.

+3 on TUH. It is worth the money and gives you some great ideas and you quickly become familiar with hammock lingo. My overall advice would be to absorb everything and make your setup your own creation. You are starting a wonderful new addiction, I mean hobby.

Thanks for the advice ill definitely take a look. One quick amateur question.. I set my hammock up for the first time today. Relatively comfortable but seems excessively taut down the center. Any advice out there?

Hang it with more slack. At first it looks ridiculous but soon you get used to it and hang it more or less by eye. Be sure to use a diagonal lie to avoid the dreaded banana back.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I'll also endorse The Ultimate Hang, and Shug's videos. I cut my hammock teeth on those, and still learning every day.

Addictive for sure. Fun for sure.
