I am jumping in on this thread as I am also needing my first UQ. Did a quick over night this weekend where it got down into the 40's and I was a bit chilled honestly with no UQ. My bag was supposed to be good to 30 degrees, but still ended up slightly chilled.

Even though I live in Central Texas, I went with the 0° under quilt; I hate being cold! Like others have said, I carry a little more weight sometimes, but I don't have to plan out the cold nights either; just hang the quilt and sleep!

Wow almost exactly a four yesr old post brought back to life.

I buy 20°F or Winter. I then vent if too warm. The TQ is what I regulate with.

With no UQ at all I'm surprised you were only "slightly chilled." When the down in the bottom of a sleeping bag is compressed, its insulation value is nearly zero.

UPDATE: I have since added a Jarbidge and White Cloud to the stable. Should be pretty well set I think.

I would say go with one that keeps you warm in the winter, you can always vent to go cooler. Better to have the extra warmth then not need it then to need it and not have it. Plus if you go with the warmer quilt then eventually you can purchase a colder one when you want, and if you spent the higher dollar amount first it feels a bit better if you spend less later on lol, I bought a zero and then bought a minus 40, and it was hard to drop that much coin, but so well worth it

As others have said you will get more than one uq. I would start with an uq at least 10* warmer than the temperature you expect to camp in during the winter. It is safer to be warm!!!

Why? Because the weather report says a low of 35° a week in advance...then 35° then 35° then 34° then BOOM 27° as you check the forecast on your drive out.
